VOLUME II/BLACK LOVE: ORIGINS - With this second volume in the LIMITED EDITION Collection we continue our celebration of Black Culture.

ORIGINS primarily features Adinkra symbols and Nsibidi symbols with a few additions like the pin, MOTHER.

THIS PIN: Twisted. A symbol that relates to the proverb that states life’s journey is full of twists and turns. Life requires versatility and resilience- this symbol represents those qualities.

ANDINKRA originally created by the Bono people of Gyaman are symbols from Ghana that represent concepts or aphorisms. Adinkra are used extensively in fabrics, logos and pottery. They are incorporated into walls and other architectural features. The symbols represent objects that encapsulate evocative messages conveying traditional wisdom, aspects of life, or the environment and have a decorative function. There are many symbols with distinct meanings, often linked with proverbs. In the words of Kwame Anthony Appiah, they were one of the means for “supporting the transmission of a complex and nuanced body of practice and belief”.

NSIBIDI (also known as nsibiri, nchibiddi or nchibiddy) is a system of symbols indigenous to what is now southeastern Nigeria. The symbols are at least over 4,000 years old. Early forms appeared on excavated pottery as well as what are most likely ceramic stools and headrests from the Calabar region with a range of dates from at least 400 and possibly earlier. Nsibidi was used to decorate the skin, calabashes, sculptures, and clothing items, as well as to communicate messages on houses There are thousands of nsibidi symbols.
