Love Is in the Details: Designing the Alpha Eta 25-Year Bag Charm

This has been one of my favorite custom projects because of the specificity of my clients’ request and the freedom that eventually came from understanding what they wanted.
They came to me with a sample. They knew they wanted a bag charm featuring three distinct charms.
But when I looked at the sample, my first thought was: if I simply recreate this, what is there for PinMe to do?
After more conversation, I realized the sample was not the design brief. It was the structure. Each charm would carry a different part of the story.
Once I understood that, I could design.
The Centerpiece
My favorite piece of the trio is the large central charm. This is the one I’d wear alone.
The chapter is Alpha Eta, so of course the A and H had to be present. But I wanted the letters themselves to create the architecture of the charm.
The result is this large triangular form built from the A and H, with 25 YEARS incorporated into the center.
And if you know, you know.
There are even elephant feet worked into the structure. I do not know that everyone will immediately see them, but I know they are there because that’s how I sketched it.
A design does not always have to announce every piece of its meaning. Sometimes the meaning is embedded in the structure.
Spring 2001
The second charm reads SPR2001 vertically.
Each stone represents a member of the line.
There are 34.
There was no way to place 34 stones in one straight vertical row and still create a charm with proportions that made sense.
So I split the stones. Half on one side. Half on the other.
The stones now frame SPR2001, giving the charm its own distinct silhouette while still connecting it visually to the rest of the collection.
With Love, Spring 2000
The third charm reads:
Happy Deltaversary
with Love
Spring 2000
Spring 2000 is the line gifting this piece to Spring 2001.
Originally, that inscription was supposed to appear on the back of one of the charms. But once I saw the words, I thought they deserved more. So I flipped the idea. I made the message the front.
And on the reverse side, I placed the names of every member of Spring 2001.
What better way to make something feel specifically created for you than to put your name on it?
Not a generic anniversary piece. Not something that could belong to anyone.
Yours.

My client came to me wanting three charms on a bag charm. What emerged was a piece about chapter identity, sisterhood, and love.
That is the part of custom design I lean into most. Taking the idea and finding the details that make it yours.
Love is in the details.
